Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church

Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church

Listed on the national register for historic places, Mt. Zion is a landmark building facing Asheville’s culturally significant block, Eagle Street.  The church was fashioned in the Victorian-gothic style popular in the early 1900’s in the US.  This style is really very distinct for Asheville, a city that’s famously Art Deco designed.

Check out Thomas Wolfe’s short story, Child by Tiger, to help visulize Mt. Zion’s founding pastor Reverend Robert Parker Rumley’s fiery sermons.  Also, make sure and walk down Eagle Street to fully appreciate Asheville’s rich African American heritage.
